Sat. 7/15.
Drove to Las Vegas, stopping at Lake Mead Visitor Center on the way. Hard to find a campground with good reviews, instead it’s “OK except for the undesirables in the restrooms”; “and the hookers roaming the grounds”. Had dinner with our friends Jen & 3 yr old Parker.
Sun. 7/16.
All of us slept late. Hanging out in the clubhouse after doing laundry because it’s cooler, our AC can’t keep up with the heat here. 107 at 4 pm.
Mon. 7/17.
Saw Bob’s friend Ana Marie from 2-4. Needed directions because The Mansion at MGM Grand (where she is the general manager) is so exclusive a hotel that the front gate is not marked and it’s on an unmarked street (alleyway) off the main drag. Our poor beat-up Chevy Sonic was quite out of place next to the fancy cars of the other guests.
Took in a Las Vegas show, Piff the Magic Dragon. You may have seen him on America’s Got Talent.
Tue. 7/18.
Drove back to Kingman, AZ, stopped at the Begay shop on the way (a turquoise artist family; we have some of their work).
Wed. 7/19.
Have tires rotated, fuel filter changed. Just like being at home.
See Route 66 museum. Rt 66 is a 2,448 mi journey thru America, created 1926. Its diagonal path linked hundreds of rural communities and became a principle East-West artery. First was the excitement of seeing The West and getting there quickly
then the necessity, courtesy of the Dust Bowl
and World Wars
In 1984 Interstate 40 was completed, and it bypassed the small communities along rt 66.
Drive south to Phoenix.
Thur. 7/20. Visit with Laura & Al.
Fri. 7/21.
Toured the Heard Museum in Phoenix; bought lots of books. Went to Flagstaff to visit The Old Town Trading Company, which Bob knew about from his turquoise research.
